Pfizer is warning consumers not to take prescription drugs like Propecia, which is sold under the brand name Avodart, because it contains the active ingredient in Viagra.
“If you’re taking Propecia or any other form of Viagra, you’re putting your health at risk,” the company said in a statement.
It is not clear whether the company is taking the drug or whether other factors may be involved.
The Food and Drug Administration has not yet issued a warning for the two drugs.
In a letter to the consumer, Pfizer said it would continue to follow its doctor-ordered guidelines and that the drug is approved for use.
“The FDA is now reviewing the safety and effectiveness of this product and will consider the safety and effectiveness of our products,” said Dr. Diana R. Perelman, the company’s director of public health.
Pfizer also announced a series of updates to its website to improve its user experience and increase its reach. A blog post on the company’s website describes the website as “a new way for people to access the medication they need.”
In an email to doctors, a spokesman for Pfizer said it was “not aware of any changes to the information or changes to the way the company is offering our products.”
